Testing New Aircraft/Tech
Among the many units in Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF), the strongest is arguably the Aggressor Squadron which plays the role of the enemy during combat exercises.
However, in terms of pure piloting skills, the test pilots belonging to the Air Development and Test Wing may be just as formidable.
Located at Gifu Air Base, this unit specializes in evaluating the performance of new aircraft, missiles, and other equipment before officially introducing them.
For instance, they have previously tested the F-2 fighter, C-2 transport aircraft, the experimental X-2 stealth fighter, and the XASM-3 anti-ship missile.
In addition to these domestic equipment, existing aircraft such as the F-15J fighter are also flown to test their limits and seek any improvements.
The unit is divided into several teams, including the Test Flight Squadron for piloting, the Guided Weapons Testing Squadron mainly for missiles, and the Electronic Warfare Squadron.
While the Test Flight Squadron tends to receive media attention, other specialized teams are equally vital as they explore the latest technology that brings air superiority.
Undoubtedly Elite Pilots
Since the Air Development and Test Wing handles newly developed or introduced equipment, the pilots need to step into the “unknown” as they identify operational challenges.
New aircrafts are likely susceptible to higher accident rates, thereby exposing the test pilots to increased risks. Thus, the pilots are required to possess superb aviation skills as well as the capability to fly various types of aircraft.
Obviously, not everyone can achieve such task, making those who passed the exam and piloting course undoubtedly elite pilots.
This recognition is common worldwide, including the US Air Force, and Japan is no exception in this realm.
While they may not surpass the Aggressors in terms of pure piloting technique, their wide and sophisticated expertise regarding different aircraft is unmatched.
