Still Used By JMSDF/JASDF

Ever since its introduction, the Type 64 rifle has found itself used by not only the JSDFG, but also the Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF), the Coast Guard and even some police units.

As JGSDF combat units have completed their transition to the Type 89 rifle, some rear and reserve units are still stuck with the aging Type 64s due to budget constraints. The rifle’s robust nature has also help extend their lifespan, leading to the storage of numerous Type 64s as reserve weapons.

Meanwhile, the Type 64 rifle is virtually the main weapon for newcomers in a number of educational institutions such as the JGSDF High Technical School and the National Defense Academy.

For the JMSDF and JASDF, the old Type 64s remain as the standard issue rifle since both organizations receive low priority towards ground weapons. Of course, special units like the”Special Security Team” have been issued with the newer Type 89, but the majority have been irrelevant from such luxury.
